IELTS : International English Language Testing System

IELTS was introduces in 1989 to help assess English Skills of applicants who wish to study in English Language. The Test is conducted by British Council and IDP Australia. The Test is also used for immigration and employment purpose. So Student has to select from the Following Two Tests

The Academic Ielts Test

This test is for individuals who would like to plan their study in any Foreign Country in English either Undergraduate or Post graduate level. The countries Include Britain (UK), Canada, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and some universities in USA. Test result is valid for two years from the date of the Test taken.

The General Training Ielts Test

This test is suitable for individuals who require more general level use of English for colleges, high schools, and employment or immigration purpose. The result of this test is also valid for two years from the date of the test taken.

IELTS Test is divided into four sections

Listening 30 minutes
Reading 60 minutes
Writing 60 minutes
Speaking 15 minutes

Score Requirements

Each section has a score of 0- 9 scale and 9 means expert user of English. The desired score varies from university to university but minimum 6.0 average score is required in all sections. Post graduate courses ask for 6.5 to 7.00 average score. For employment and immigration minimum score required is 7.00 averages.

Test Dates

The Tests are conducted every month and the dates are generally available fifteen days prior to the Test dates. For Test dates you can contact SEICCO or British Council or IDP Australia or visit websites.

Difference between Academic & General Training IELTS Tests

Listening and Speaking Sections are the same for both the Academic and The General Training IELTS tests but Reading and writing Sections are different. For more information visit websites.

IELTS Examination Fees

The examination fees for IELTS are Rs.9300 since February 2013

TOEFL : TEST OF ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized Test that measures the English proficiency of students who wish to enter college and university programs in United States of America and Canada. TOEFL is produced and administered by Educational Testing Service, a professional Test development organization in Princeton, New Jersey,USA.

TOEFLibt is internet based test introduced in September 2005 and is for a duration 3.0 hours long with 10 minutes break after two sections. Before this TOEFL was Computer based Test TOEFL,CBT.

TOEFL Test is divided into four sections

Reading section 60 minutes score 30
Listening section 40 minutes score 30
Speaking section 20 minutes score 30
Writing section 50 minutes score 30
Total Time 3 hours Total score 120

Score Requirements

The desired score to get admission to any good ranked university is above 100 out of 120. That means in each section the average score should be 25. Above 100 score is recognized to get admitted in top ranked universities.

The examination fees for TOEFL is $165

GRE : GRADUATE RECORDS EXAMINATION

GRE computer based Test is revised from 1st August 2011 and consists of six sections.

Two Analytical Writing Sections 30 minutes per section
Two Verbal Reasoning Sections 30 minutes per section
Two Quantitative Reasoning  sections 35 minutes per section
Unscored section 30 -35 minutes per section
Total Time for the Test 3 hours 45 minutes

GRE revised General Test scores are as under:

Analytical Writing section 0 – 6 score scale
Verbal Reasoning section 130 – 170 score scale
Quantitative reasoning section 130 – 170 score scale

Desirable score 280 – 340 score scale

Score Requirements

The ideal score according to new pattern of GRE should be more than more than 300. If 300 or more score is achieved, then the top ranked university admissions are possible.

GMAT: GENERAL MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST

GMAT is standardized Test, conducted on line, designed to help admissions officers to evaluate how suitable individual applicants are for their graduate business and management programs. It measures basic analytical writing skills, verbal reasoning and mathematical skills that test taker has developed over a long period of time through education and work experience. GMAT does not measure a person’s knowledge of specific fields of study. It will assess individual’s acquired skills.

GMAT test consists of four sections

Two Analytical Writing sections 30 minutes per section
Quantitative Section 75 minutes
Verbal section 75 minutes
Total time of Test 210- 220 minutes including 10 min. break

GMAT Test scores are as under

Analytical Writing section 0 – 6 score scale
Verbal Reasoning section 200-400 score scale
Quantitative reasoning section 200-400 score scale
Total score 400- 800 score scale
Desirable score 600 – 800 score scale

SAT : SCHOLASTIC ADMISSION TEST

SAT is the Test conducted by College Board based in USA. . This is most widely taken standardized written test in USA for undergraduate admissions and is conducted all over the world.. SAT test includes Critical Reading section, Writing skills section and Quantitative section. SAT is conducted 6 times a year on specific dates starting from October ending June.

SAT Test Format

Three sections of Critical Reading 25 minutes two sections and 20 mins. One section
Three sections of Quantitative 25 minutes two sections and 20 mins one section
Three sections of Writing 25 minutes two sections and 10 mins. One section
Experimental section 25 minutes (Not considered for score)
Total time for the Test 4 hours approximate.
